France Insoumise Prepares for 2027 Presidential Election

Kathmandu— Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the presidential candidate of France Insoumise, is strategizing for the 2027 election, aiming to mobilize nonvoters and navigate state power. The party's summer university, Amfis, in Valence, France, featured discussions on historical references, nonvoter engagement, and potential conflicts with the EU.

Historical References and Power Navigation

The event included historical references to past revolutionaries and communards, such as Maximilien Robespierre, Louise Michel, and Thomas Sankara. These references were used to illustrate the party's path to power and potential conflicts with the European Union. Stathis Kouvelakis, a former member of Syriza's central committee, warned that a confrontation with the EU would be inevitable, citing the Syriza experience as a cautionary tale.

Mobilizing Nonvoters

France Insoumise is focusing on nonvoters, particularly young people, to increase its chances of reaching the runoff. According to Bompard, there is an abstention gap between bourgeois and working-class neighborhoods, with working-class citizens increasingly not voting. The party plans to hold mass public meetings and engage in door-to-door campaigns to sign up nonvoters to the electoral roll. The Caravanes Populaires initiative has already signed up 1,500 people in twelve days.

Navigating the Left

France Insoumise is trying to avoid the splits that occurred in 2022, when the Parti Communiste Français and Écologistes maintained their hopeless presidential bids. The party hopes to win the argument within the Écologistes or prepare the ground for a swift withdrawal of their candidate should members decide to back Mélenchon. France Insoumise is also considering the potential support from New Caledonia's pro-independence coalition, the FLNKS.

Runoff Strategy

In the second round, France Insoumise plans to address its campaign to the mass of the people, campaigning on issues where the Left enjoys majority support, such as repealing Macron's pension reform. However, the party will need to be minimally reassuring to centrist voters to convince them to vote negatively against Marine Le Pen. The party is preparing for a potential challenge from the far right, with the framework of demonization moving from Le Pen's Rassemblement National to France Insoumise.

Despite the challenges, France Insoumise and its activists are prepared to give it their all in the coming eight months, with renewed feelings of political possibility.
