Cuba Faces Sixth Blackout This Year, Hitting National Grid

Kathmandu— Cuba’s ongoing struggle to restore power following a series of nationwide outages was exacerbated on Monday when the country experienced its sixth blackout this year. The state electricity provider reported that unfavorable weather had caused disruptions, affecting generator units and delaying restoration efforts across Havana and several provinces in central and western Cuba.

Restoration Efforts Underway

By midday on Monday, power began to return to parts of the capital city, Havana, with authorities stating that approximately half of the city had electricity restored. However, later in the day, the state electricity provider issued a statement warning that existing weather events were causing further disruptions to the grid and affecting generator units.

The company emphasized its commitment to working intensively to resolve these issues and achieve a system reset as soon as possible. By early evening, there was some progress reported, with four generating units at Energas Jaruco operating and several transmission substations around Havana re-energized.

Impact on Daily Life

Repeated blackouts since the beginning of the year have severely disrupted daily life in Cuba. Most Cubans now experience power for only a few hours each day, making normal activities nearly impossible. The government has blamed decades-long U.S. sanctions and embargoes for limiting access to fuel, financing, and spare parts needed to maintain its power system.

The Trump administration tightened these sanctions this year, including an oil embargo that further complicates Cuba’s economic challenges.
