Kathmandu— Health Minister for Nepal, Nisha Mehta, has assured lawmakers during the House of Representatives meeting today that coordination between central, provincial, and local health agencies is being conducted to address an impending shortage of anti-snake venom. With only 1,269 vials currently available, procurement efforts are underway to secure an additional 13,200 vials by July end, sufficient to treat up to 850 snakebite patients.

Procurement Efforts Underway

Minister Mehta highlighted that the Department of Health Services has initiated procurement for an additional 13,200 vials of anti-snake venom. This move aims to ensure a steady supply and prevent any shortages that could compromise patient care.

The current stockpile stands at 1,269 vials across all three levels of health agencies, which is enough to treat approximately 850 snakebite patients.

Challenges in Treatment

Minister Mehta emphasized that the situation for snakebite victims is further complicated by a lack of immediate medical attention. Many patients resort to traditional and unscientific primary treatment at home, delaying their access to proper care.

"The supply will be completed by July end," Minister Mehta stated, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.
