Kathmandu— On Wednesday, the central government granted Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan an additional year-long extension in service until August 22, 2027. This decision was made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the second consecutive year that Mohan has received such an extension.

Background on Govind Mohan

Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service officer from Sikkim cadre, was appointed as Union Home Secretary in August 2024. He had previously served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture from October 2021 to August 2024 and has extensive experience handling internal security and administrative responsibilities within the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Mohan completed his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from BHU's Institute of Technology in 1986 and a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Ahmedabad in 1988.

Details of the Extension

The extension was approved under relaxation of provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. The Ministry of Personnel order states that Mohan's tenure will be extended for a period of one year beyond August 22, 2026, up to August 22, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
