Bangladesh Son of Ex-PM Alleges Country Mirrors Pakistan’s Role on Indian Front

Kathmandu— Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed warned that Bangladesh has become another Pakistan for India on its eastern front. He accused the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of having an open hand in Bangladesh and raised concerns over discrepancies in death tolls reported during recent protests.

Discrepancies in Protest Death Toll

Wazed questioned the official death toll from the July-August 2024 protests, noting a significant difference between figures cited by the United Nations and those provided by the current government. He pointed out that while the UN reported around 1,400 deaths, the government claimed only about 800. Wazed urged the international community to investigate these discrepancies further.

Criticism of Government Actions

Wazed criticized the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus for passing an ordinance granting blanket immunity to protesters accused of killings, including those against civilians and police officers. He argued that such legal protections are unprecedented and violate human rights norms.

He also highlighted the detention of tens of thousands of people since August 2024, many without trial or due process, raising concerns about their health and well-being in custody.
