Kathmandu— Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during a public rally in Haldwani on Saturday, alleging that neither organization contributed to India’s independence movement. Speaking at the Ramlila ground, Kharge asserted that the Congress party was the primary force responsible for fighting for the country’s freedom and protecting its democratic institutions.

Claims of Historical Neglect

Kharge questioned the historical involvement of the BJP and RSS in the independence movement, suggesting that their claims to patriotism are unfounded. He questioned whether any RSS members or BJP loyalists had ever been imprisoned for the cause of national freedom.

“The BJP and the RSS have done nothing for the country. They contributed nothing to the freedom struggle,” Kharge said during his address. He further suggested that any individuals from those organizations who did participate in the movement were likely former Congress members who had defected.

Defense of Rahul Gandhi

The Congress president used the platform to praise Rahul Gandhi for his grassroots engagement and his efforts to protect the Indian Constitution. Kharge highlighted Gandhi’s extensive travels, including his journey from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, as evidence of his commitment to understanding the struggles of the populace.

Kharge noted that Gandhi has consistently advocated for the concerns of youth, farmers, students, and the poor. He contrasted this approach with the BJP leadership, questioning if any of their leaders engage with the public in a similar manner.

Commemoration of the Quit India Movement

The rally took place on the anniversary of the launch of the Quit India Movement, which Mahatma Gandhi initiated on August 8, 1942. Kharge recalled how the ‘Do or Die’ slogan united the nation against British rule, eventually leading to independence.

He also paid tribute to the state of Uttarakhand, referring to it as ‘Devbhoomi’ and a land of the brave. Kharge specifically lauded the Kumaon and Garhwal Regiments and noted the state’s contribution to national defense, including the production of the first Param Vir Chakra recipient.

The rally served as a significant platform for the Congress party to reinforce its historical identity and its current political mission.
