Odisha’s Tribal Empowerment Initiatives Praised as National Model

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Sujata Rout Karthikeyan stated that the party's commitment to tribal empowerment and heritage, particularly initiatives undertaken during Naveen Patnaik’s 24 years of governance in Odisha, have established a benchmark for other Indian states. Speaking on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples – celebrated as International Adivasi Diwas in Odisha – Karthikeyan detailed celebrations held at BJD headquarters and emphasized discussions focused on both preserving tribal culture and advancing their fundamental rights. The party's long-term policies, including the establishment of Special Development Councils, are intended to strengthen traditional roots while enabling modern opportunities for tribal communities.

Focus on Preservation and Promotion

Karthikeyan highlighted the BJD government’s creation of Special Development Councils (SDCs) in 23 districts as a unique initiative aimed at preserving and promoting tribal history, culture, and traditional knowledge. She noted that these programs have served as a model for other states across India, demonstrating Odisha's leadership in tribal welfare. The SDCs were established under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik over the past two decades.

Celebrations Marking Adivasi Diwas

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was celebrated as International Adivasi Diwas in Odisha, with a large program held at Shankha Bhavan, the BJD headquarters. Tribes from across Odisha attended the event, where they were addressed by BJD chief and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik. Karthikeyan, a former IAS officer who joined the BJD in June, emphasized that the celebrations extended beyond cultural displays to encompass discussions on rights and empowerment.

Balancing Tradition with Modernity

According to Karthikeyan, the BJD’s vision is to support tribal communities in maintaining their heritage while also providing them with opportunities for advancement. She stated that the government has worked to strengthen traditional roots and empower tribes to “fly in the world, prove themselves and have a voice.” The party also expressed pride in Gen Z as the future of both Odisha and India.

Karthikeyan affirmed the Biju Janata Dal’s continued focus on supporting tribal communities and empowering future generations.
