Egypt Urges Israel to Withdraw from Gaza, Allow Sustained Aid Delivery

Kathmandu— During a phone conversation with Nikolay Mladenov, Director-General of US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty advocated for the complete implementation of the Gaza roadmap on August 10th, 2026. This includes a full Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave and consistent delivery of humanitarian aid to address ongoing needs in Gaza. The discussion centered around recent developments in Gaza and efforts to enact Trump’s peace plan, as well as arrangements for an International Stabilisation Force intended to maintain security during a transitional period.

Roadmap Provisions

The proposed roadmap outlines several key steps, including the transfer of administrative control of Gaza to a Palestinian technocratic committee and the deployment of an international stabilisation force. It also details plans for placing weapons under the supervision of the National Committee for Gaza Administration, followed by a phased Israeli withdrawal and subsequent reconstruction efforts in the territory. Ultimately, the plan aims to enable the Palestinian Authority to resume its responsibilities in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Israeli Rejection and Demilitarization Demand

Despite the proposed framework, Israel has rejected Trump’s 15-point Gaza peace plan. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israeli forces will not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed. He emphasized at a cabinet meeting that the military would continue to thwart threats against Israeli citizens and forces.

Political Considerations for Netanyahu

Netanyahu faces pressure from within his coalition, with far-right partners urging him to abandon the peace plan altogether. Amidst a competitive electoral race, he stated Israel remains in discussions with Washington, noting that some of their ideas are acceptable while others require firm opposition.

The situation remains at an impasse as Israel insists on full demilitarization of Hamas before any withdrawal, despite ongoing military strikes and the established ceasefire last October. The future of the peace plan hinges on resolving this core disagreement.
