Houthi Attack Kills Seven in Yemen’s Al-Mukha City

Kathmandu— At least seven people were killed and 30 others injured late Sunday when Yemen’s Al-Mukha city and its port came under a missile and drone attack from Houthi rebel groups, according to the Yemeni government military. The attack targeted both civilian and military locations within and around the city, including infrastructure, residential facilities, power stations, and military positions. Colonel Majid Abdullah Al-Nuzaili, spokesperson for the Yemeni government’s military, stated that four members of the armed forces and three civilians were among those killed in the assault.

Details of the Attack

The attack targeted a range of locations within Al-Mukha, encompassing civilian infrastructure such as employee residences and offices, alongside power generation stations and military sites. Colonel Al-Nuzaili emphasized that this constituted a clear violation of international humanitarian law. The majority of the thirty injured individuals were civilians, with most receiving treatment and being discharged shortly after.

Government Response

Yemeni government air defense units stationed in Al-Mukha reportedly intercepted and destroyed eleven drones involved in the attack. The armed forces condemned the Houthi actions, accusing them of deliberately targeting civilian facilities and violating international humanitarian law. They affirmed their commitment to continuing operations against the Houthi threat while prioritizing the protection of civilians and vital infrastructure.

Houthi Claims

The Houthis claimed responsibility for launching ballistic missiles and drones at what they described as Saudi military concentrations and weapons depots in the Mukha area. This attack follows a recent strike on Yemen’s Marib city, where residential neighborhoods and camps housing displaced people were targeted with ballistic missiles.

The Yemeni government has vowed to continue its operations against the Houthi threat following this latest incident.
