Scientists at Fudan University and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) have demonstrated that quantum machine learning can surpass classical neural networks in specific forecasting tasks, while collaborations between tech companies like Origin Quantum and USTC are improving drug screening accuracy using domestically developed quantum computers. This progress reflects a broader trend where various branches of quantum technology are maturing at different rates, opening doors for commercialization in secure communications, healthcare, scientific research, and industrial computing.
Quantum Computing Complements Classical Systems
While the development of fully fault-tolerant quantum computers remains a long-term goal, current efforts focus on integrating quantum capabilities with existing classical infrastructure. In Hefei, China’s first hybrid quantum supercomputing center combines high-performance supercomputers with both superconducting and trapped-ion quantum computers to tackle complex problems. According to Wang Guyue, director of the Project Management Center at Hefei Big Data Asset Operation Co., Ltd., this approach involves dividing computational tasks, assigning those requiring simple inputs but intricate calculations to quantum processors while leaving the remainder for classical systems.
Real-World Applications Emerge in Healthcare and Energy
Quantum technology is beginning to impact critical sectors like healthcare and renewable energy. CIQTEK has developed a magnetocardiography system utilizing quantum spin magnetometers, enabling faster and more detailed cardiac scans for early cardiovascular screening. Furthermore, quantum computing is being applied to photovoltaic power forecasting, with preliminary results showing approximately a 5 percent improvement in prediction accuracy compared to conventional algorithms. Chen Zhengping, deputy director of the research institute at Guochuang Software, notes this could reduce solar power curtailment by several million kilowatt-hours annually across China.
Growing Quantum Ecosystem and Investment
Over the past two decades, Hefei has become a central hub for quantum technology in China, fostering an ecosystem of over 100 companies involved in the entire industrial chain. Anhui province is actively promoting commercialization through initiatives encouraging real-world testing of quantum technologies across various sectors. A 10-billion-yuan (approximately $1.47 billion USD) fund has been established to support emerging technologies, including quantum computing, according to Chen Jun, director of the Anhui provincial development and reform commission.
International Expansion and Partnerships
Chinese quantum companies are extending their reach beyond domestic markets. Origin Quantum is exporting quantum computing equipment and cloud services, particularly to countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. A recent partnership between Thailand’s Chulalongkorn University, USTC, and Unitary Quantum will lead to the construction of Thailand's first trapped-ion quantum computer, scheduled for completion in July 2026.
The focus within China’s quantum industry has shifted from demonstrating feasibility to identifying practical economic and social benefits, signaling a commitment to translating scientific advancements into tangible real-world applications.
