Disease Outbreak Reported in Ceuta Following Mass Migrant Influx

Kathmandu— An outbreak of infectious diseases, including gastroenteritis, has been reported in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta following a large influx of migrants from neighboring Morocco in late July. Over 72,000 people entered Ceuta on July 30-31, overwhelming local resources and raising concerns about public health due to overcrowding and inadequate sanitation. While reports of a healthcare system collapse have been disputed, medical professionals warn the situation could facilitate further disease spread.

Health Concerns Rise with Overcrowding

Spain’s National Institute for Health Management (INGESA) confirmed an outbreak of gastroenteritis among recently arrived migrants on Friday. The agency also reported cases of scabies and impetigo, noting that both conditions were present in Ceuta prior to the recent surge in arrivals. Gastroenteritis causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines, while scabies is a contagious skin infestation and impetigo is a bacterial skin infection.

Local medical professionals have expressed concern that overcrowding and poor sanitation among the thousands of migrants living outdoors could contribute to further disease transmission. Many reportedly lack access to sufficient drinking water, toilets, and showers.

Influx Overwhelms Local Resources

More than 72,000 migrants entered Ceuta between July 30-31, a number equivalent to approximately 70% of the enclave’s regular population. This influx quickly overwhelmed reception centers and placed significant strain on healthcare and law enforcement resources. While most have since been returned to Morocco, an estimated 11,000 migrants remain in Ceuta according to local officials.

EU Tensions Emerge

The situation has also sparked tensions within the European Union regarding migration policies. Twenty-two EU leaders signed a letter accusing Spain of undermining border security, with some calling for its removal from the Schengen Area – which allows for borderless travel between member states. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez responded by labeling the actions of his European neighbors as “selfish.”

The situation in Ceuta remains under observation as authorities continue to manage the remaining migrant population and address public health concerns.
