The shooting occurred during East End Day, a local community event held annually at Charles Young Park. Authorities blocked off several roads surrounding the park as they investigated the scene, with State Police officers also present to assist. Tents remained in place as evidence was collected.

Lexington Director Devine Carama, who attended the event, described the shooting as devastating. According to local media reports and a Facebook post by Carama, he sheltered four young people when someone nearby was shot. “Gunfire at a peaceful event, in broad daylight, with women and children present is unacceptable,” Carama said.

Authorities have not released information regarding a suspect or motive as of Saturday evening, but Chief Weathers indicated there was no ongoing threat to the public.
