Drone Attack Targets Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister’s Office

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— The office of Masrour Barzani, prime minister of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), was targeted in a drone attack early Monday morning, according to the region's security agency. Simultaneously, the residence of the head of the KRG’s security and intelligence agency was also struck by drones. No casualties were reported in either incident, but the attacks have been condemned as a threat to regional stability. The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service stated that the drones originated from Iranian territory.

Details of the Attack

The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service identified the drones used in the attack as Hadid-110 models, stating they targeted both Barzani’s private office and the security directorate's residence. While it remains unclear whether the drones successfully hit their intended targets, authorities confirmed no injuries or deaths resulted from the incident. The attacks occurred early Monday morning, prompting a swift response from KRG officials.

Condemnation From Regional Leaders

Masrour Barzani condemned the attack in a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as “illegitimate and unacceptable.” He further stated that the incident represents “a dangerous step and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.” The KRG prime minister’s strong words underscore the seriousness with which the regional government views the escalation.

Regional Tensions and Allegations

The attacks come amid ongoing tensions between Iran and Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region. Iran and affiliated armed groups have frequently accused the KRG of harboring Iranian Kurdish opposition groups, whom Tehran considers a security risk. Iraqi Kurdish authorities consistently deny these allegations, maintaining they do not permit their territory to be used for hostile actions against neighboring countries.

The investigation into the drone attack is ongoing, with regional officials likely to increase security measures in response to this latest escalation of tensions.
