Jordan Invests Heavily to Welcome Christian Pilgrims for Baptism Anniversary

Kathmandu— Jordan is undertaking a major initiative to prepare for the anticipated celebration of the 2,000-year anniversary of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. The Muslim nation is investing over $100 million to enhance infrastructure and facilities at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a site considered one of Christianity’s holiest locations, with the goal of attracting Christian pilgrims from around the world. This effort includes agreements signed this month between Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and Christian leaders to build a dedicated village for visitors, a baptism-focused museum, a green corridor, and improved access routes. The year 2030 is widely recognized as marking two millennia since John the Baptist baptized Jesus, an event that initiated his public ministry.

Historical Significance of Bethany Beyond the Jordan

Bethany Beyond the Jordan holds deep historical roots, situated on the east bank of the Jordan River – a boundary separating modern-day Jordan from the Israeli-occupied West Bank. In Jesus’ time, this area was part of Perea, a Jewish client state under Roman rule. The location is recognized as where John the Baptist performed baptisms and where Jesus himself underwent the rite, marking a pivotal moment in Christian theology.

Papal Visits and Jordan's Religious Role

Jordan has established itself as a significant destination for Christian pilgrimage, having uniquely hosted four popes: Paul VI in 1964, before extensive site restoration; John Paul II; Benedict XVI; and Francis. This history underscores the nation’s commitment to preserving and promoting its religious heritage. Prime Minister Hassan emphasized that honoring the baptism anniversary “reflects Jordan’s historical and religious standing and its role as a global destination for Christian pilgrimage, while highlighting the Kingdom’s message of coexistence.”

Pilgrimage Challenges in the Region

While two other key Christian holy sites – the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem – are nearby, access can be complicated. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is generally accessible in East Jerusalem, but reaching Bethlehem requires navigating Israeli military checkpoints, barriers, and road closures that are subject to unpredictable shutdowns by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). This presents logistical challenges for pilgrims seeking to visit all three significant locations.

The development project at Bethany Beyond the Jordan is expected to be completed in advance of the 2030 anniversary, aiming to provide a welcoming and accessible experience for Christian pilgrims visiting this historically important site.
