China and El Salvador Pledge Strengthened Ties on Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

Kathmandu— Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, held talks with Ernesto Castro, president of El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly, in Beijing on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The meeting focused on bolstering bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries as they mark the eighth anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties. Both leaders expressed a commitment to strengthening political trust and fostering collaboration across various sectors, including education, culture, and multilateral coordination.

Diplomatic Milestone

This year marks eight years since China and El Salvador formally established diplomatic relations on August 21st. Zhao Leji indicated China’s willingness to collaborate with El Salvador to build upon the agreements made between their respective heads of state, aiming for further advancement in their bilateral relationship. He emphasized a desire to elevate ties to new levels through continued engagement.

Mutual Support and Key Principles

Zhao highlighted the importance of deepening political mutual trust and fostering a supportive friendship between the two nations. China expressed its appreciation for El Salvador’s adherence to the one-China principle, as well as its support regarding China's positions on Taiwan and human rights issues. Castro affirmed that developing friendly relations with China holds significant value for El Salvador.

Areas for Expanded Cooperation

Both sides agreed to prioritize the welfare of their citizens and explore opportunities for increased exchanges and cooperation in areas such as education, culture, media, and other fields. They also discussed strengthening multilateral coordination to safeguard shared interests. The NPC expressed its readiness to collaborate with El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly to facilitate exchanges between committees, friendship groups, and legislators.

Legislative Exchange

Zhao proposed that the NPC of China and the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador enhance friendly exchanges, share experiences in areas like rule of law and poverty reduction, and provide legal frameworks for practical cooperation. Castro stated that the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador is prepared to strengthen mutual learning through these exchanges, aiming to build a bridge for further development of bilateral relations.

The meeting signals continued commitment from both China and El Salvador to strengthening their diplomatic and economic ties in the years ahead.
