Kathmandu— Chinese Vice Premier Liu Guozhong urged officials on Friday to strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation efforts in agricultural production, aiming to ensure a successful autumn harvest this year. Liu, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, delivered these remarks during a video conference held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs focused on both autumn grain production and disaster control. He emphasized proactive monitoring, early warnings, and targeted technical guidance to safeguard crop yields and protect vulnerable communities.

Focus on Monitoring and Early Warning

Liu Guozhong stressed the importance of closely monitoring potential disasters and providing timely forecasts and early warnings to mitigate risks. He directed officials to implement all necessary measures to stabilize and increase grain production, acknowledging the critical role of preventative action in securing a successful harvest. This includes targeted technical guidance for farmers facing specific challenges.

Addressing Late-Season Threats

The Vice Premier specifically called for strong efforts to guard against meteorological disasters, crop diseases, and pests during the crucial latter stages of autumn grain production. Minimizing disaster-related losses was highlighted as a key priority, emphasizing the need for swift and effective responses to emerging threats. He also underscored the importance of maintaining and improving farmland irrigation and drainage systems.

Protecting Vulnerable Households

Liu Guozhong directed officials to provide timely assistance to households at risk of falling into or relapsing into poverty due to disaster-related impacts on their livelihoods. This commitment reflects a broader effort to ensure social stability and protect vulnerable populations from the economic consequences of natural disasters. He also called for continued strengthening of management in flood-prone areas.

Long-Term Farmland Development

Beyond immediate disaster response, Liu emphasized the need to advance the development of high-standard farmland with a focus on quality. Following his participation in the video conference, he visited Hebei Province on Thursday to inspect autumn grain growth, assess progress on high-standard farmland projects, and evaluate agricultural supplies and weather services.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is expected to implement these directives immediately, focusing on proactive disaster preparedness and support for farmers as the autumn harvest approaches.
