US Support for Iran War Declines Alongside Trump’s Approval Rating

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Public support in the United States for the war on Iran is decreasing as President Donald Trump faces record-low approval ratings, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday. The decline in backing for the conflict, which began February 28 with US and Israeli attacks on Iran, is driven by falling Republican support and concerns over rising gas prices and the potential for a prolonged war. The survey of over 1,200 adults indicates growing economic anxieties as the conflict enters its sixth month.

Shifting Public Opinion

Just 31 percent of Americans surveyed now support US military action against Iran, down from 37 percent in March and 34 percent earlier this month. Notably, support among Republican respondents has also decreased, falling to 69 percent compared with 77 percent in March. This shift suggests a growing weariness with the conflict across the political spectrum.

Economic Impact Fuels Concerns

The war is contributing to economic pressures felt by Americans, particularly at the gas pump. Iran’s de facto blockade of oil exports has driven US petrol prices near record highs, now more than $1 per gallon higher than before the conflict began. The Trump administration recently announced “Operation Economic Outcast,” pledging to further increase economic pressure on Iran and target all sources of revenue.

Prolonged Conflict Expected

A significant majority of Americans anticipate a lengthy war, with 83 percent believing the conflict will continue for an extended period—an increase from 80 percent earlier this month. This expectation poses a challenge for President Trump, who campaigned on promises to lower inflation and avoid foreign military engagements.

Political Implications Loom

The declining approval ratings – with Trump’s standing at 33 percent in the latest poll, matching his lowest recorded number – could have consequences for Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections. The survey indicates independent voters currently favor Democrats when asked about congressional support, with 33 percent backing a Democratic candidate compared to 19 percent for a Republican.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted over four days with 1,215 adults nationwide, has a margin of error of 3 percentage points. The ongoing conflict and its economic effects are likely to remain key issues as the midterm elections approach.
