Northern Nigerian Basketball Initiative Empowers Girls Through Sport

Kathmandu— Khamila Sani Ibrahim grew up in Kano State, Nigeria, where organized sports were uncommon for girls and basketball was rarely seen on the court; now, an initiative called Grassroots To Greatness (G2G) is changing that landscape by providing training, competition, and support to young female athletes across northern Nigeria. The program addresses historical barriers like limited access to facilities and funding, as well as cultural expectations, offering a space for girls to develop their skills and pursue their dreams while remaining true to their identities. Founded by youth sports advocate Jawahir Bello, G2G partners with local coaches to mobilize participants and organize tournaments that prioritize modesty and cultural sensitivity.

Addressing Historical Barriers

Across northern Nigerian communities, basketball and football have traditionally been considered male-dominated spaces, creating significant obstacles for girls who wish to participate. Limited access to courts and equipment, a lack of coaching and financial support, and fewer competitive opportunities have historically hindered their progress. Ibrahim recalled having to secretly practice basketball during school holidays, balancing her passion with family expectations and societal norms.

Modesty and Cultural Values

G2G distinguishes itself by prioritizing cultural sensitivity in its approach to female sports participation. Players compete wearing custom hijabs, long sports vests, and athletic tights, ensuring modesty while allowing them to fully engage in the game. “Our core value is about participating in sports without doing anything that goes against our cultural values or our identity as Muslims,” Bello explained. She noted that the initiative has been met with encouragement from community stakeholders who appreciate its commitment to respecting local traditions.

Community-Led Approach

To effectively reach and mobilize participants, G2G collaborates directly with existing grassroots coaches who already run community teams. This partnership leverages established trust and cultural understanding within local communities. Mansur Abdullahi, assistant coach of Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national football team, the Falconets, emphasized the importance of this approach, stating that “local groups provide the actual trust and cultural understanding” that larger sports structures may lack. He believes community-led initiatives are crucial for creating opportunities that align with existing values.

Empowering Players On and Off the Court

The G2G tournaments offer more than just athletic competition; they provide financial stipends, equipment, transportation, and a supportive environment where girls feel valued. Fatima Diouf, a young player from Abuja, highlighted the broader life lessons she gained through the program, including teamwork, confidence, discipline, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Ibrahim’s father initially had reservations about her participation in competitive sports but became a strong supporter after witnessing the structured and respectful environment fostered by G2G.

Looking Towards the Future

Participants are now envisioning futures previously out of reach, with dreams of securing college scholarships in the United States or playing professionally. Bello hopes that G2G will demonstrate to girls across northern Nigeria that they can excel in sports without compromising their identity or cultural values. “You can keep your identity, stay covered and still achieve something in life,” she said.

G2G continues to expand its reach and impact, aiming to create a sustainable pathway for female athletes in northern Nigeria and inspire a new generation of confident, empowered players.
