Gunfire And Explosions Heard In Niger’s Capital City

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Sustained gunfire and explosions were reported across several areas of Niamey, the capital of Niger, early Saturday morning, with initial reports indicating attacks targeting both Diori Hamani International Airport and the vicinity of the presidential palace. The cause of the unrest remains unclear, though security sources suggest a coordinated attack by unidentified assailants. Witnesses described heavy and persistent gunfire, while officials claim security forces have regained control after engaging with the attackers.

Initial Reports Of Attacks

Two Reuters witnesses reported hearing sustained gunfire and explosions throughout Niamey beginning early Saturday. The initial reports indicated that the fighting centered around Diori Hamani International Airport and near the presidential palace, though the specific targets and motives were not immediately known. A security source stated that “terrorists” had attacked the airport and attempted to breach security surrounding the presidency.

Conflicting Claims And Security Response

Bana Wagana Ibrahim, a member of Niger’s Bureau of the Consultative Council and a deputy in the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) parliament, claimed on Facebook that attackers targeted Base 101, a major military installation within Niamey. Ibrahim stated that security forces had successfully regained control of the base following the assault. However, Reuters was unable to independently verify these claims. A second security source reported that security forces launched search operations and asserted that the attackers were either neutralized or fled the area.

Recent Political Instability

Niger has been under military rule since a coup in July 2023 ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. Since then, General Abdourahamane Tchiani’s government has moved away from traditional Western allies and strengthened ties with Russia. The country also joined Mali and Burkina Faso in forming the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), effectively breaking away from the ECOWAS regional bloc. Niger is a mineral-rich nation possessing significant reserves of uranium, oil, and gold.

Renewed Fighting At Airport

According to the first witness, gunfire resumed around Niamey’s international airport at approximately 02:13 GMT. The continued fighting suggests ongoing security concerns despite initial reports of control being re-established by Nigerien forces.

The situation in Niamey remains fluid as authorities continue search operations and assess the extent of the attacks.
