Kathmandu— Devastating flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall on August 26 have claimed the lives of at least 734 people across several districts in Nepal. The worst-affected areas include Chitwan, Nawalparasi East and West, Rasuwa, Dhading, Tanahu, Nuwakot, and Gorkha. Rescue operations are ongoing, with security personnel having successfully rescued 2,699 individuals as of Wednesday morning, while a significant number of security force members remain unaccounted for.

Extent of the Casualties

As of 8:00 am local time on August 30th, authorities reported 13 deaths in Rasuwa district, 50 in Dhading, 36 in Tanahu, 52 in Nuwakot, 58 in Gorkha, 259 in Chitwan, 185 in Nawalparasi East and 82 in Nawalparasi West. These figures represent the total number of bodies recovered from the flood-affected regions following the catastrophic event.

Rescue Operations Underway

Security personnel have been actively involved in rescue efforts across the affected districts. A total of 676 people were rescued from Rasuwa, while 2,020 individuals were saved from Nuwakot and an additional 3 from Dhading. The injured are receiving medical attention at hospitals in Kathmandu, with 160 patients having been discharged after recovering from their injuries.

Missing Security Personnel

The floods have also impacted Nepal’s security forces, with a total of 84 employees – comprising Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force personnel – currently unaccounted for. Specifically, 44 are members of the Nepali Army, 27 belong to the Nepal Police, and 13 are from the Armed Police Force.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the floods, with ongoing efforts focused on locating the missing security personnel and supporting recovery initiatives.
