Kathmandu— A key stretch of the Prithvi Highway near Krishna Bhir in Nepal’s Dhading district has collapsed following flooding in the Trishuli River, disrupting travel to and from Kathmandu on Wednesday. More than half of the 20-meter road section caved in due to erosion undermining its foundation, prompting authorities to redirect traffic via alternative routes for both large and small vehicles. The Department of Roads has dispatched a team to assess the damage and begin planning repairs.

Road Collapse and Initial Response

The collapse occurred at Krishna Bhir along the Prithvi Highway, a major transportation artery connecting Kathmandu with other parts of Nepal. Flooding in the adjacent Trishuli River eroded the road’s base, causing a significant portion to give way. Naresh Raj Subedi, spokesperson for the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office and Superintendent of Police, stated that arrangements have been made to divert traffic.

Alternative Route Options

To accommodate affected travelers, authorities have implemented temporary route changes. Large vehicles leaving Kathmandu are being directed via Naubise-Palung-Bhainse, while smaller vehicles and microbuses will utilize the Pharping road. Traffic police are urging all drivers and passengers to verify road conditions before commencing travel due to widespread disruptions caused by floods and landslides in various locations.

Damage Assessment Underway

Dr. Bijay Jaisi, Director General of the Department of Roads, confirmed that an expert team has been dispatched from Kathmandu to conduct a thorough assessment of the collapsed section of highway. The team will evaluate the geographical conditions and extent of the damage before formulating a plan for repair and reconstruction.

The Department of Roads is expected to announce a timeline for repairs following the completion of the on-site assessment, but no immediate timeframe has been given.
