Venezuela’s Maduro Shares First Photos from US Detention

Kathmandu— Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has shared his first photographs from a United States detention facility, where he and his wife Cilia Flores have been held since their January abduction by U.S. special forces. The images, taken on June 25, show Maduro wearing a grey tracksuit and making peace signs with his hands, appearing to have lost considerable weight since his capture.

Photos and Message

Maduro posted the photographs on social media platforms X and Telegram. In his message, he wrote in Spanish: 'I am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren, to the boys and girls, and to all the good people who love us.' He added that they are standing firm with their hearts full of love for those supporting them.

Legal Status

Maduro and his wife are being held on drug trafficking and firearm possession charges, which they deny. Their trial is scheduled to begin in New York on June 1, 2027. The former president does not have access to newspapers or the internet but can speak by phone with family and lawyers for approximately 300 minutes a month.

Oil Deal Context

The photographs were published two days after interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced a 'historic' oil agreement allowing the U.S. to operate Venezuelan oil fields. This deal came amid widespread destruction in northern Venezuela following twin deadly earthquakes that killed more than 6,500 people.
