Spanish PM Accuses Russia, Israel of Spreading Disinformation on Migrant Crisis

Kathmandu— Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has accused Russia and Israel of spreading disinformation regarding the mass migration into Ceuta last month. According to research by the European External Action Service (EEAS), disinformation was amplified on social networks following the crisis, which saw at least 70,000 migrants cross from Morocco into Spain’s North African enclave in late July.

Disinformation Campaign Details

Sanchez stated that rumors and false information spread online after July 30 and 31 were linked to Russia and Israel. He emphasized that these countries used the crisis to criticize Spain, given their disagreements with Madrid over positions on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The disinformation included claims by human trafficking groups that migrants who entered Ceuta could not be deported back to Morocco, which Sanchez called a false assertion.

Moroccan Authorities' Role

Sanchez also addressed the involvement of Moroccan authorities in the migrant influx, stating that no intelligence service with which Spain cooperates suggested any role by Morocco. He emphasized the need for cooperation rather than distrust towards Morocco to resolve the crisis.

Government Response and Aid

In response to the crisis, Sanchez promised an additional 168 million euros in aid for Ceuta. The Spanish government is also investigating what happened during the influx and has appealed for European solidarity to address the broader migration issue.
