Kennedy Center Disassembles ‘Blue’ Sculpture Amid Trump-Era Changes

Kathmandu— The Kennedy Center removed the 'Blue' sculpture, a tall blue stick figure designed by sculptor Joel Shapiro and installed in 2019, on Wednesday. The disassembly comes amid ongoing changes at the cultural institution during President Donald Trump's second term, including legal battles over naming rights and broader efforts to reshape Washington.

Sculpture's Significance

Designed by Joel Shapiro, 'Blue' was a minimalist stick figure that celebrated action, risk, performance, and energy. The sculpture stood as a welcoming fixture for visitors coming into the city and served as the mascot for National Dance Day celebrations.

Legal Battles and Political Changes

The removal of 'Blue' falls within a broader context of changes at the Kennedy Center, where Trump-aligned board members are fighting in court to rename parts of the institution. This effort is part of larger initiatives under President Trump's administration aimed at reshaping Washington, including plans for new construction and renovations.

Public Reaction

Michael Sebastiani from Hands off the Arts expressed sadness over the removal, stating that art should provoke thought and that 'Blue' was a significant part of the Kennedy Center's campus. The sculpture’s disassembly was met with protective measures to ensure its safe removal.
