Kathmandu— France has officially recorded its hottest summer ever in 2026, joining other European countries like Belgium, Britain, and Ireland which have also experienced record-breaking temperatures. French Environment Minister Monique Barbut made the announcement on Thursday during a presentation of the summer climate report, noting that this year's average temperature was 3.6 degrees Celsius above normal.

Heatwave Impact

France endured multiple severe heatwaves in 2026, including one in late June that set a new intensity record and led to an unprecedented 2,025 excess deaths, with the majority among people aged over 45. Another prolonged heatwave stretched from late July into August, matching a previous record of 23 days set in 1983.

Wildfires and Drought

The summer was marked by very low rainfall, with a deficit of nearly 40 percent, making it the second driest since records began. France experienced several major wildfires during this period, even in regions that are typically cooler and wetter.

Government Response

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu tasked Environment Minister Monique Barbut with presenting new measures to speed up the implementation of France’s national climate change adaptation plan. On Thursday, she promised conclusions by the end of September, including a five-year funding plan.
