Kathmandu— The current and former presidents of the International Criminal Court's governing body have issued a joint statement condemning efforts by the Trump administration to isolate the ICC diplomatically, warning that such actions threaten the international legal order and could lead to a world where political power determines the application of international law.

Diplomatic Pressure on ICC

The current and former presidents of the ICC's Assembly of States Parties, including Paivi Kaukoranta, have published a joint op-ed in the Just Security law and policy journal, detailing their concerns about diplomatic isolation efforts targeting the ICC.

They specifically reference the Trump administration's pressure on countries to distance themselves from the court, including sanctions against ICC judges and officials, and efforts to encourage states to withdraw from the Rome Statute or join measures intended to weaken the institution.

The ICC's governing body has called for member states and international organizations to provide political, legal, and practical support to the court to resist pressure aimed at weakening it.
