Humanitarian Aid Should Not Be Reduced to a Dollar Ranking

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— As Nepal grapples with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides, international donors have mobilized emergency funds, supplies, and technical assistance, yet a growing social media narrative comparing aid contributions by country has sparked concern, with Nepali officials and experts emphasizing that humanitarian aid should be evaluated by its impact, not its monetary value, to avoid discouraging future support and undermining solidarity.

The Misleading Aid Comparison Narrative

Social media has begun circulating a narrative comparing which countries have provided more or less aid to Nepal following the recent disasters, framing humanitarian assistance as a competition rather than a collective effort.

This approach, experts warn, risks discouraging nations from contributing if their efforts are measured against others, particularly when aid takes diverse forms such as cash, supplies, rescue teams, or technical expertise, making direct monetary comparisons inaccurate and unhelpful.

Nepal's government and international partners are prioritizing coordinated assistance aligned with national recovery priorities, with calls for donors to focus on immediate needs rather than publicizing aid rankings.
