Kathmandu— Following the devastating Bhotekoshi flash flood that struck Nepal on August 26, the Nepal Police has been working tirelessly to provide relief and support to affected communities. With limited resources and challenging conditions, the security agency has mobilized over 7,900 personnel to carry out search and rescue operations, manage relief efforts, and ensure public safety.

Search and Rescue Operations

The Nepal Police has set up a disaster rescue and coordination information management center under the leadership of a DIG at the Police Headquarters. This center operates round the clock, monitoring rescue efforts and receiving information from relatives of missing individuals. Trained dogs and drones have been deployed to assist in search and rescue operations, particularly in difficult terrain. So far, 6,853 persons have been rescued, while 5,015 remain missing. The police have received requests for the search and rescue of 1,351 persons.

Relief and Rehabilitation

In addition to search and rescue, the Nepal Police has been involved in relief distribution and rehabilitation efforts. Special teams have been mobilized to manage dead bodies, with DNA profiling conducted at the Nepal Police Hospital in Maharajgunj to identify the deceased. The police have also taken steps to prevent criminal activities and misinformation related to the disaster. Special attention has been given to the treatment of injured individuals, public awareness, and psychosocial counseling. Women police personnel have been deployed to control possible violence against women and children at holding centers.

Collaboration and Coordination

The Nepal Police has maintained close collaboration and cooperation with other security agencies and local governments to normalize public life in the affected regions. Despite the challenges, the security agency has demonstrated utmost responsibility and professional integrity in its efforts. The police have also set up a 'missing help desk' at the Police Headquarters and Tribhuvan International Airport to exchange information with embassies about foreign nationals who went out of contact due to the disaster.
