China’s Top Grain-Producing Province Transforms Paddies into Thriving Tourism Destinations

Kathmandu— In northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, once vast rice paddies are now transformed into vibrant tourist destinations, showcasing intricate rice paddy art and diverse agritourism experiences. This initiative, driven by the provincial government, aims to boost local incomes and diversify tourism, aligning with national efforts to integrate agriculture with culture and tourism.

Rice Paddy Art Innovations

The transformation of rice paddies into artistic landscapes began in 2017, initially relying on manual labor for precise positioning. Today, GPS and 3D composition techniques have significantly enhanced the accuracy and complexity of the designs. These art pieces, such as a giant QR code, span 120,000 square meters and attract numerous visitors. Visitors can now engage in various activities, including rice planting, milling, and camping, enriching their agritourism experience.

Economic Impact on Local Communities

The agritourism initiative has had a significant positive impact on local communities. In Xinghuo Village, Han Liuhua, a former migrant worker, returned to her village in 2018 and opened a restaurant that has since thrived. The village's scenic area, which opened in 2025, attracted 1.33 million visitors, generated 300 million yuan in revenue, and created jobs for over 800 people. The village's transformation from a simple rice cultivation area to a vibrant tourist destination has not only boosted local incomes but also preserved traditional cultural elements.

Diversification of Agritourism Products

Local enterprises in Heilongjiang, such as Qiaofu Dayuan Agricultural Co., Ltd., are actively developing agritourism products that combine rice culture events with educational experiences. These initiatives not only enhance the visitor experience but also increase the value of their premium rice products. For instance, the company's rice has seen a 40 percent premium in price due to the added experiential value. This diversification strategy aligns with the national push to integrate agriculture with culture and tourism, aiming to create new growth drivers for the tourism industry.

The success of Heilongjiang's agritourism initiatives highlights the potential for similar projects across China, as the government continues to promote the integration of agriculture with cultural and tourism activities to diversify tourism offerings and boost local economies.
