Kathmandu— On August 26, 2026, a mudslide triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse in Nepal struck Gyirong Port on the China-Nepal border, resulting in 43 confirmed deaths and 519 missing individuals, with 261 of the missing being foreign nationals from 23 countries. A large-scale rescue operation was launched by China, involving over 2,500 personnel and 500 vehicles, and providing assistance to 1,720 Nepalese border residents.

Rescue Operations

Local authorities provided assistance to 1,720 Nepalese border residents, many of whom were stranded due to the destruction of the border port, a crucial entry and exit point for them. China has also established a disaster information notification mechanism, providing Nepal with daily updates on meteorological, hydrological, and glacier data.

International Involvement

The mudslide affected not only Chinese citizens but also 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, including 519 missing individuals. The press conference held on September 6, 2026, in Gyirong County, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, highlighted the international dimension of the disaster. Journalists from overseas media outlets visited the mudslide site over the weekend, underscoring the global impact of the event.
