Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Inches Closer as Diplomatic Talks Progress

Kathmandu— A deal to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz appears increasingly possible, with U.S. and Iranian officials signaling progress in ongoing diplomatic efforts. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC that a resolution could come as soon as today or tomorrow, while Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei described talks with Oman as positive but emphasized the need to safeguard national security.

U.S. and Iranian Officials Signal Optimism

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed cautious optimism about reaching a deal within days, stating that there is a chance for an agreement today or tomorrow. President Donald Trump echoed this sentiment, telling Fox News that the United States is having “very good discussions” with Iran but warned of severe consequences if no resolution is reached soon.

In contrast, Iranian officials have been more reserved in their public statements. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told state-run IRIB TV on Monday that no negotiations were underway or scheduled with the United States, insisting instead that talks were focused solely on managing shipping traffic through the strait with Oman.

Regional Mediators Facilitate Indirect Contacts

Qatar’s prime minister adviser and spokesperson Majed Al Ansari confirmed ongoing mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, noting that talks had reached “very progressive stages.” Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman are coordinating closely to facilitate indirect contacts between Washington and Tehran.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also acknowledged progress in negotiations but emphasized that finality has not yet been achieved. He stated, “There has been progress in those talks, but not finality yet. We’re hoping that will happen very shortly.”

As diplomatic efforts continue to de-escalate tensions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, all parties involved are closely monitoring developments for a potential breakthrough.
