Kathmandu— The BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital in Chitwan is set to build a bone marrow transplant unit, marking a significant advancement in medical care. The project will receive substantial financial and technical assistance from the Chinese government, including construction of infrastructure and procurement of medical equipment. A recent visit by a Chinese team has laid the groundwork for this initiative.

Chinese Support and Infrastructure Development

The Chinese government is providing comprehensive support to establish the bone marrow transplant unit at the BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital. This includes funding for construction, procurement of medical equipment, and training programs for hospital staff. A team from China recently visited the hospital to assess infrastructure needs and discuss project requirements with local officials from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Urban Development, and Building Construction Project, as well as the Nepal Electricity Authority’s distribution center in Bharatpur.

Project Timeline and Financial Details

The Chinese team has outlined a detailed timeline for the project. An agreement is expected to be signed with the Nepalese government soon, after which construction will commence in 2026. The project aims to complete within one and a half years at an estimated cost of 37 million RMB provided by China’s International Development Cooperation Agency.

The bone marrow transplant facility will feature five beds and is designed to be the country's first state-of-the-art unit of its kind. Currently, three doctors and nursing staff from the hospital are undergoing specialized training in China to prepare for operations at the new unit.
