South Korean Police Raid Starbucks HQ Over ‘Tank Day’ Promotion

Kathmandu— On Wednesday, police raided the headquarters of Starbucks Korea as part of an ongoing investigation into a promotional event that sparked widespread outrage and protests. The incident involved the sale of large to-go cups called 'tank tumblers,' which were seen by many as trivializing the Gwangju Uprising of 1980.

Promotional Event Sparks Controversy

In May, Starbucks Korea launched a promotional event featuring large to-go cups labeled 'tank tumblers.' The timing and nature of this promotion were perceived as insensitive by many South Koreans, particularly in light of the Gwangju Uprising. This tragic event occurred on May 18, 1980, when the military junta violently suppressed pro-democracy protests in Gwangju, resulting in at least 165 civilian deaths and widespread human rights abuses.

The promotion was seen as a direct reference to 'Tank Day,' a term used by some to describe the day of the uprising. The backlash against Starbucks was immediate and intense, leading to public demonstrations and boycotts across South Korea.

Investigation and Corporate Response

Following the controversy, President Lee Jae Myung expressed his outrage over the promotion. In response, both Shinsegae Group chairman Chung Yong-jin and Starbucks Korea CEO Son Jung-hyun resigned from their positions after issuing a public apology.

Starbucks Korea conducted its own internal investigation but found no evidence of wrongdoing. However, the company acknowledged that the inquiry was hampered by limitations on compelling individuals involved in planning the promotion to provide evidence such as phone records.

The police raid underscores the serious nature of the allegations and the ongoing scrutiny faced by Starbucks Korea.
