Kathmandu— Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, stated that large-scale irrigation projects are crucial for increasing agricultural production and keeping young people from leaving the country. He made these remarks while inspecting the Sunsari-Morang Irrigation Project on Wednesday, where he heard concerns from locals regarding issues caused by the project itself. The Minister stressed the need to view irrigation not just as canal construction but as a holistic system that includes farmer empowerment programs and integrated agricultural planning.

Project Impact and Economic Contribution

The Sunsari-Morang Irrigation Project currently supports agricultural production valued at over Rs 14 billion annually, according to the Minister. Shrestha also noted that effective irrigation systems can contribute to energy production and other economic activities beyond agriculture.

He indicated the Ministry is undertaking a comprehensive study to determine how best to integrate irrigation and agricultural programs for maximum impact.

Addressing Local Concerns

During his inspection, Minister Shrestha listened to complaints from people affected by the irrigation project. He emphasized that the system should be designed with the needs of local water consumers in mind, ensuring their rights are respected.

Shrestha stated that irrigation projects must not be limited to canal construction but also include schemes for empowering farmers and investing in agricultural development.

The Minister’s secretariat shared information regarding his visit and underscored the importance of prioritizing nature-based solutions when developing irrigation infrastructure.
