Tamil Nadu Politicians Clash Over Mekedatu Dam Row in Assembly

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— In Tamil Nadu's Assembly on Friday, Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin demanded an all-party meeting to address Karnataka’s bid to construct the Mekedatu Dam over the Cauvery River. Chief Minister Vijay countered that there was no need for such a meeting and urged opposition parties not to politicize the issue.

Stalin's Call for Unity

Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasized the importance of unity among all political parties in Tamil Nadu regarding the Mekedatu Dam. He criticized Chief Minister Vijay for postponing his visit to Karnataka and questioned why the government was avoiding an all-party meeting on the issue.

Vijay's Rejection

Chief Minister Vijay dismissed the need for an all-party meeting, stating that the government had already communicated its stance through a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He urged opposition parties not to engage in political maneuvering over the dam issue and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to pursuing the matter legally.

Political Tensions

The debate also touched on past actions regarding the Mekedatu Dam, with former Chief Minister MK Stalin's review petitions being brought up. DMK leader KN Nehru defended the previous administration's prompt action and criticized what he saw as unnecessary claims of delay.
