Kathmandu— A state of emergency was declared early Saturday morning in British Columbia as fast-moving wildfires continue to sweep across western Canada, displacing thousands of residents and forcing immediate evacuations in several districts. The Bald Range wildfire remains out of control, prompting authorities to warn residents to prepare to leave their homes as conditions change rapidly.
Evacuations and Emergency Measures
The district of Summerland has issued evacuation orders as the fires continue to spread. On Saturday, local officials announced that the area had lost power due to the fire and instructed residents to boil water.
Saturday morning’s evacuation orders affect the Peachland watershed, the Brenda Mines area, Lower Princeton and its downtown core areas, according to Emergency Info BC. All residents in these areas have been asked to prepare to leave immediately.
Regional Impact and Climate Factors
The wildfires have caused significant disruption across the province, with British Columbia having issued 39 evacuation orders and 49 alerts. Canada has faced a summer of large wildfires, with blazes tearing across provinces such as Ontario and Quebec.
Scientists have noted that climate change has worsened wildfire conditions in recent decades, as areas across the globe experience periods of extreme drought and heat. In recent months, Canada and the United States experienced a record-setting heat dome that helped exacerbate wildfire conditions by drying out vegetation.
Resource Deployment and Response
Approximately 1,500 firefighters are currently deployed across British Columbia. To assist with the crisis, firefighting teams from Mexico, Australia, France, and New Zealand have provided support to Canada.
British Columbia’s Premier David Eby stated earlier this week that the province has sufficient resources to deal with the fires, noting that additional firefighters and aircraft are at the government's disposal. "If asked to evacuate, go immediately. The conditions are changing extremely quickly," Eby said in a social media post on Friday night.
Authorities continue to urge residents in affected areas to follow all official updates and prepare for immediate evacuation.
