Kathmandu— Polling stations across Zambia opened at 6 a.m. local time (04:00 GMT) on Thursday for a presidential election that will gauge public support for incumbent Hakainde Hichilema and his administration's efforts to address the country’s economic challenges. Approximately 8.7 million registered voters are participating in the election, which also includes contests for 226 parliamentary seats – an increase from the previous 156. The vote comes as many Zambians continue to struggle with high living costs despite recent declines in inflation and a strengthening currency, and will determine if Hichilema can secure a second five-year term.

Economic Hardship Drives Voter Concerns

More than 70 percent of Zambia’s population of 22 million lives on less than $3 per day, according to World Bank data. While inflation decreased to 6.8 percent in April and the Zambian kwacha has gained strength, many citizens still face significant financial burdens related to food and energy prices. The national unemployment rate currently stands at around 10 percent. These economic realities are central to voters’ concerns as they head to the polls.

A Tightening Political Landscape

President Hichilema, a 64-year-old businessman, won his first term in 2021 after multiple unsuccessful attempts. He is campaigning on promises of job creation and an ambitious infrastructure development plan. His main challenger is Brian Mundubile, age 55, representing the newly formed NRPUP party and backed by an alliance of opposition groups. Mundubile previously served as a minister under the Patriotic Front (PF) government that held power from 2011 to 2021.

Opposition Claims of Unfair Practices

Brian Mundubile recently voiced concerns about restrictions placed on his party’s campaign, suggesting the election may not be entirely free and fair. Speaking to AFP news agency on Wednesday, he stated that a victory for the opposition would initiate “a national reset” and focus on reconciliation within Zambia. He emphasized the importance of unity for development, stating, “There’s very little development you can do with a divided country.”

Results are expected by August 17th, with any candidate requiring more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff election. The outcome will be closely watched as Zambia seeks to maintain its status as one of Africa’s more stable democracies.
