Europe Braces for Intense Heatwave Affecting Over 135 Million

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— More than 135 million people in Europe are expected to experience temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) as a new heatwave intensifies across the continent. The majority of those affected reside in France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, with nearly three in five Europeans – around 340 million individuals – projected to feel temperatures above 30C (86F) on Thursday according to German weather service forecasts and European Commission data. This heatwave marks the fifth such event for both the UK and France this summer, exacerbating existing concerns about Europe’s vulnerability to extreme weather.

Widespread High Temperatures Forecast

Forecasts from the German weather service, combined with 2025 population projections from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, indicate that approximately 340 million Europeans will experience temperatures surpassing 30C (86F) on Thursday. This figure is corroborated by separate tracking data from Austria’s Klimadashboard. Central and southeast England are predicted to reach as high as 38C (100F), potentially making it the hottest day of the year, while France may see temperatures climb to 40C (104F).

Strain on Healthcare Systems

The extreme heat is placing significant strain on healthcare systems. The UK’s Royal College of Nursing (RCN) reported on Thursday that conditions within parts of the National Health Service (NHS) are becoming “impossible and inhumane.” Calls to the RCN helpline have detailed instances of staff collapsing during shifts, experiencing heat-related seizures, and pregnant nurses working in temperatures exceeding 30C. Many healthcare workers report a lack of access to essential cooling measures such as air conditioning, fans, or even adequate ventilation.

Drought Conditions Compound Concerns

Adding to the challenges posed by the heatwave, both France and the UK are currently facing widespread drought conditions, mirroring a broader trend across much of Europe. This has resulted in shriveled crops and depleted rivers, placing considerable stress on water supplies for households, agriculture, and the environment. The combination of extreme heat and prolonged dryness is prompting governments to seek both immediate solutions and long-term strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.

With average conditions expected for the remainder of August, the UK is poised to potentially surpass last year’s record for its hottest ever year, highlighting the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in Europe.
