Netanyahu Calls UK ‘Islamic Republic of Britain,’ Escalating Tensions

Kathmandu— Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly referred to the United Kingdom as the “Islamic Republic of Britain,” a pointed jab at a long-standing ally, signaling growing friction between Israel and the UK under its current Labour government. The comment was made on an Israeli podcast and followed criticism of British media coverage of Israel, while also referencing past remarks about the UK potentially becoming the first nuclear-armed Islamist country. The statement has drawn condemnation from Jewish groups in Britain who say Netanyahu does not speak for them.

Rising Diplomatic Tensions

Tensions between Israel and the British government have been escalating since the Labour Party came to power in 2024. The UK, mirroring actions taken by France, has paused free trade talks with Israel and suspended some arms export licenses. Furthermore, Britain imposed sanctions on far-right Israeli cabinet members Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, and last year recognized a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu’s Remarks and Context

During an appearance on the Israeli podcast Melech Blitzer Haim, Netanyahu contrasted current British media coverage with that of Randolph Churchill during the 1967 Six-Day War. He sarcastically suggested modern Britain could be called “the Islamic Republic of Britain.” He also alluded to comments made in 2022 by JD Vance suggesting the UK might become the first nuclear-armed “Islamist country,” adding, “We are making sure there won’t be another one here, in Iran.”

Domestic and International Criticism

The Israeli Prime Minister's comments were swiftly criticized within the United Kingdom. Rabbi Charley Baginsky and Rabbi Josh Lev, co-leads of the Movement for Progressive Judaism, stated that Netanyahu “does not speak for British Jews” and described his language as “dangerous and irresponsible.” Gavin Barwell, former Downing Street chief of staff under Theresa May, labelled the remarks “blatant Islamophobia” on social media. Rodwan Abouharb, an associate professor at University College London, suggested the comments were likely intended to bolster Netanyahu’s domestic political standing.

UK Policy Shifts and Gaza

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently apologized for Labour's initial response to Israel’s actions in Gaza, acknowledging the party was slow to call for a ceasefire. He indicated further action may be taken, including sanctions against those involved in violence in Gaza and measures targeting trade with illegal settlements. “We’ve got to do more to put pressure on the Israeli government,” Burnham said.

The relationship between Israel and the UK remains strained as policy differences widen, though some analysts suggest shared concerns regarding Iran may offer a point of convergence.
