Kathmandu— China’s Ministry of National Defense strongly condemned recent actions by Japanese political leaders involving the Yasukuni Shrine, including monetary offerings and personal visits, on Saturday. The ministry accused these officials of whitewashing Japan's wartime aggression and challenging the established global order stemming from World War II. Spokesperson Jiang Bin stated that such gestures disregard historical justice and demonstrate a dangerous attempt to revive militarism, particularly as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial.

Shrine’s Historical Significance

The Yasukuni Shrine has long been a source of contention between China and Japan due to its association with Japanese militarism. According to Jiang Bin, the shrine served as a spiritual and symbolic tool for Japan during its period of wartime aggression. He emphasized that honoring individuals connected to these conflicts disregards the suffering inflicted upon countries victimized by Japanese forces.

Political Condemnation

Jiang specifically criticized Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s monetary offering and Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi's visit to the shrine on the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. He accused these leaders of hypocrisy, claiming their actions contradict professed commitments to peace while simultaneously honoring those responsible for initiating war. Jiang further stated that this behavior exposes a “gravely distorted view of history” held by right-wing elements within Japan.

Warning Against Revived Militarism

The Chinese defense spokesperson urged Japan to learn from the past and avoid repeating historical mistakes. He warned that if Japan continues down a path he characterized as “new militarism,” it risks becoming a destabilizing force in the region and will ultimately face consequences. Jiang emphasized the importance of acknowledging history, particularly given this year’s commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trial.

China has called on Japan to demonstrate genuine remorse for its wartime actions and refrain from policies that could threaten regional stability.
