Historic Athens Stadium Undergoes First Deep Clean in Over a Century

Kathmandu— Athens’ iconic U-shaped Panathenaic Stadium, constructed entirely of white marble and serving as the ceremonial starting point for the Olympic flame—including for Los Angeles 2028—is undergoing its first systematic cleaning in more than a century. The project aims to remove accumulated dirt, stains from visitors, and organic material that has built up over decades, revealing the stadium’s original gleaming appearance while preserving its historical integrity. Work is currently focused on completing key sections ahead of the torch-passing ceremony for the Dakar Youth Olympics on September 10th.

A Monumental Undertaking

Rebuilt for the 1896 Olympic Games, the Panathenaic Stadium shares its building material with Athens’ famed Acropolis. The cleaning process is therefore delicate, employing conservators and specialized equipment to carefully remove layers of grime without damaging the marble. Cleaners are using low-pressure spray lances and vacuuming systems to work across the stadium's 47 steep tiers.

Revealing Centuries of History

The cleaning isn’t simply about restoring whiteness, according to Dimitris Selemis, a senior conservator at the site. “The goal of cleaning is not to make everything white. It’s to remove the dirt and the first layers of organic material that are deposited on the surface,” he explained, adding that the process will provide a better understanding of the monument's condition and history. The project is also addressing more modern blemishes, including chewing gum, high heels, and soft-drink stains.

Pride in 'Kallimarmaro'

The stadium, affectionately known as “Kallimarmaro” – meaning beautiful marble – holds a special place in Greek culture. Isidoros Kouvelos, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, expressed his pride in the venue and emphasized the importance of the restoration. “We call it Kallimarmaro because it is made of the finest marble, the best that was ever produced… We are very proud of it,” he said. He added that the cleaning will allow the stadium to “show all its brilliance” and remain a prominent symbol of the Olympic Movement.

Modernization Alongside Preservation

Beyond the cleanup, the Panathenaic Stadium is also receiving upgrades to its infrastructure, including a new track, improved lighting, and enhanced support facilities. The project is privately funded by a shipping company and overseen by the Hellenic Olympic Committee in collaboration with Culture Ministry experts. Work will continue through 2026, but is prioritized for completion of the stadium’s curved end in time for the September 10th torch-passing ceremony.

The torch-passing ceremony on September 10th will mark a significant milestone in the project and prepare the stadium to host events related to the Dakar Youth Olympics, scheduled for October 31 – November 13 in Senegal – the first Olympic competition ever held in Africa.
