Kathmandu— Lebanon is facing deepening economic hardship as its long-running financial crisis intensifies, compounded by recent Israeli attacks that have caused widespread damage to homes and agricultural land. Gasoline prices jumped approximately 25% in February, while food and rent costs increased around 20% last year, placing immense strain on a population where over one-third live below the poverty line. The situation is further exacerbated by unpaid wages and a reliance on international aid for basic necessities, raising fears of social unrest.

Economic Strain Intensifies

Lebanon’s economic collapse began in 2019, but has been worsened by ongoing conflict with Israel and the continued occupation of southern regions. The country is heavily dependent on external support to meet basic needs, leaving it vulnerable to international decisions and aid fluctuations.

A local taxi driver warned that if the current economic conditions persist, Lebanon risks a “social explosion,” stating, “People will turn against one another because when hunger strikes, boundaries disappear.”

Agricultural Land Devastated

Israeli attacks have significantly impacted Lebanon’s agricultural sector. As of early May, approximately 56,000 hectares (138,000 acres) of farmland had been damaged, representing around 22% of all agricultural land in the conflict-affected areas of southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Agriculture Ministry.

Reports indicate that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have deliberately ignited wildfires in woodland, farmland, and olive groves in southern Lebanon since a ceasefire with Hezbollah on June 17th.

The situation remains precarious as Lebanon continues to grapple with economic instability and the repercussions of ongoing conflict, highlighting its dependence on international assistance.
