Kathmandu— At least six people were killed and four wounded in a Ukrainian missile attack targeting the village of Koloskovo in Russia's Belgorod region on Monday, according to acting Governor Alexander Shuvaev. Simultaneously, Russian forces launched widespread missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, resulting in at least four deaths and nineteen injuries across multiple regions including Zaporizhia, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Odesa. The reciprocal attacks follow a pattern of escalating violence as frontline fighting remains stalled and peace negotiations are frozen.

Belgorod Strike Details

The Ukrainian attack on Koloskovo, located approximately 15km (10 miles) from Ukraine’s northeastern border, caused significant damage including a structure being burned and a vehicle damaged. Acting Belgorod Governor Alexander Shuvaev reported the casualties via the state-backed MAX platform.

Widespread Russian Attacks on Ukrainian Territory

Russian forces targeted multiple regions across Ukraine with missile and drone strikes overnight. In Zaporizhia, two people were killed and four injured. Sumy also suffered fatalities, with two deaths and one injury reported due to shelling. Further attacks in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson resulted in injuries ranging from one to five individuals per region.

The Odesa region was specifically targeted with an attack on port infrastructure in the Izmail district, near the Romanian border. A Togo-flagged civilian vessel sustained damage, but resulting fires were extinguished according to Ukrainian authorities.

Escalation of Cross-Border Violence

The recent exchange of attacks follows a similar pattern from the previous day, which resulted in nineteen combined fatalities in both countries. With ground offensives largely stalled and diplomatic efforts at an impasse, both Russia and Ukraine have increased their reliance on long-range missile strikes.

The escalation comes as civilian casualties reach their highest levels since May 2022; a UN tally reported 437 civilian deaths in Ukraine during July alone. Russian authorities also recorded an increase in civilian fatalities from Ukrainian attacks, reporting 79 deaths for the same period.

The reciprocal strikes underscore the intensifying conflict and highlight the growing toll on civilians as both sides continue to pursue military action despite stalled peace negotiations.
