Landslides and Erosion Block Nine Road Sections Across Nepal

ABC NEWS
१ भदौ २०८३, सोमबार   २ : ५५   बजे

Kathmandu— Nine road sections across Nepal are currently impassable due to landslides, road subsidence, and river erosion caused by ongoing heavy rainfall from the monsoon season, authorities reported today. The disruptions affect major routes connecting several districts, including Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli, Makawanpur, Ilam, Sindhupalchok, Rasuwa, Rukum West, Lamjung, Myagdi, and Sankhuwasabha. Nepal Police have issued a public advisory urging travelers to check road conditions and exercise caution due to the continued risk of further landslides and erosion.

Highway Restrictions Implemented

The BP Highway, connecting Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli districts, is subject to restricted movement between 6:00pm and 4:00am daily due to flood risks. Vehicles are permitted to travel on this section from 4:00am to 6:00pm. Similarly, traffic on the Kanti Lokpath in Makawanpur district is limited from 5:00pm to 5:00am. These restrictions aim to minimize risk during periods of heightened vulnerability.

Key Routes Severely Impacted

Several critical roadways have been completely blocked by landslides and erosion. The Araniko Highway is obstructed near Iku in Sindhupalchok district, with a separate section also having subsided nearby. The Mechi Highway in Ilam district is impassable due to muddy conditions at Rajduwali, though an alternative route exists. In Rasuwa district, the Trishuli River has undermined the Pasang Lhamu Highway at Khalte, disrupting traffic along the Trishuli-Mailung-Syafrubehi road section.

Widespread Disruption in Multiple Districts

Beyond these major routes, several other roads are also affected. The Bheri Corridor in Rukum West, Besisahar-Manang road in Lamjung, Beni-Jomsom road in Myagdi, and Khandbari-Kimathanka section of the Koshi Highway in Sankhuwasabha have all been blocked by landslides or subsidence. These closures further complicate travel across the country.

Police Urge Caution

Nepal Police released a notice today advising passengers to be aware of road conditions before commencing journeys and to take necessary precautions. Authorities emphasized that the risk of landslides, road subsidence, and river erosion remains high in hilly and mountainous regions due to the persistent rainfall.

Authorities continue to monitor affected areas and work towards restoring access as weather conditions permit. Travelers are advised to stay updated on road closures and heed all safety warnings.
