Kathmandu— A massive wave of Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow region overnight, injuring at least three civilians – including a ten-year-old girl – damaging homes and infrastructure, and causing widespread power outages. The attack, involving hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), targeted multiple districts outside the Russian capital, disrupting air traffic and prompting evacuations. Authorities reported intercepting and destroying a significant number of drones, but not before they caused considerable damage and left over 5,000 people without electricity.
Civilian Injuries and Property Damage
Governor Andrey Vorobyev reported that drones impacted several districts surrounding Moscow, with the most severe incident occurring in Ramensky where a drone crashed into a private home, injuring a ten-year-old girl with shrapnel. A woman was injured by falling debris in Bogorodsky District and a 27-year-old man sustained shrapnel wounds in Kolomna; all three have been hospitalized. In Pavlovsky Posad, a UAV caused a fire that completely destroyed a private house, while another blaze damaged the roof of an apartment building, forcing dozens of families to evacuate. Fires were also reported in Kolomna, Kotelniki and Elektrostal due to falling debris.
Infrastructure Disruption
The attack significantly disrupted essential services across the Moscow region. More than 5,000 consumers and 46 socially important facilities in Likino-Dulyovo and Orekhovo-Zuyevo experienced power outages after equipment damage impacted the Pavlovsky Posad branch network of regional power company Mosoblenergo. A Wildberries warehouse in Bogorodsky was also struck by a drone, causing minor damage to an exterior wall, though the facility had been evacuated and no goods were damaged. Flights were suspended at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports, while Sheremetyevo airport switched to coordinated operations with authorities.
Scale of the Attack
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that 180 UAVs were downed over the region, adding that a total of 620 drones targeted Moscow and surrounding areas between Monday evening and Tuesday morning. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 791 Ukrainian fixed-wing UAVs across the country overnight, also reporting interceptions over 15 other regions and the Azov and Black seas. Nine UAVs were shot down over Ryazan Region, injuring three people according to Governor Pavel Malkov. This latest attack represents one of the largest Ukrainian drone raids since the beginning of the year, following an even larger reported attack on August 16th.
Ukrainian long-range attacks on Russian territory have increased in recent weeks, targeting civilian infrastructure amid ongoing battlefield challenges. The situation remains fluid as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and work to restore essential services.
