Kathmandu— NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot successfully replaced a critical communications antenna on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS) during a six-hour spacewalk, designated US Spacewalk 97. The astronauts exited the Quest airlock to address an issue with the Space-to-Ground antenna, which is essential for high-speed data transmission between the orbiting laboratory and Mission Control in Houston. The repair work was completed on Thursday, restoring full communication functionality to the ISS.
Restoring Vital Communications
The primary objective of Spacewalk 97 was to replace a malfunctioning Space-to-Ground antenna. This antenna is a key component of the ISS’s communications infrastructure, enabling high-speed data relay for scientific experiments, spacecraft telemetry, and video conferencing. Without a functioning antenna, communication bandwidth would be significantly reduced, impacting operations and research capabilities onboard the station.
The astronauts carefully removed the faulty antenna and installed its replacement, ensuring secure connections and proper alignment. The entire process required meticulous attention to detail and coordination between the spacewalking crew and ground control.
Spacewalk Execution
Menon and Adenot exited the Quest airlock at approximately 8:00 a.m. EDT, beginning their work on the exterior of the ISS. The spacewalk lasted for six hours, during which they methodically worked through the planned tasks. Ground controllers in Houston provided real-time guidance and support throughout the operation.
The successful completion of Spacewalk 97 demonstrates the continued international collaboration that underpins the International Space Station program. Both NASA and ESA played crucial roles in planning and executing the repair mission.
With the new antenna installed, communication systems on the ISS have been fully restored, ensuring uninterrupted data transmission for ongoing research and operations.
