Kathmandu— The 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Digital Economy Forum is scheduled to take place from September 14-16 in Urumqi, located in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of northwest China. The event will convene approximately 500 attendees—including government officials, experts from think tanks, business leaders, academics, and representatives from industry associations—from across SCO member states, with over 200 international delegates expected to participate. Organizers aim to foster dialogue and collaboration on the growing digital economy within the SCO framework, building upon previous commitments made at the 2025 Tianjin Summit.

Forum Structure and Key Events

The forum will feature a comprehensive program including a ministerial-level closed-door meeting, an opening ceremony with a plenary session, four specialized sub-forums, and various side events. Yu Ying, deputy head of the National Data Administration (NDA), detailed that these elements are designed to facilitate robust discussion and practical outcomes. The ministerial session is intended to strengthen intergovernmental dialogue and cooperation, ultimately leading to the development of a priority agenda for SCO digital economy collaboration spanning 2026-2027.

Thematic Focus Areas

Four thematic sub-forums will delve into specific aspects of the digital economy. These include discussions on enhancing digital connectivity, promoting digital trade and corridor economies, exploring applications of digital and intelligent industries, and addressing issues related to digital governance and capacity building. The forum’s structure reflects a commitment to covering the breadth of challenges and opportunities within the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Boosting Practical Cooperation

Beyond discussions, the forum will incorporate practical elements aimed at fostering tangible results. An interactive exhibition is planned alongside business matchmaking sessions designed to connect participants and facilitate partnerships. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit local projects and enterprises, providing firsthand insights into China’s digital economy initiatives. Digital economy cooperation has been a growing priority for the SCO, with member states previously adopting a statement at the 2025 Tianjin Summit committing to deeper collaboration on data security standards, infrastructure development, and public service delivery.

The forum is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts within the SCO to strengthen digital economic ties and establish collaborative frameworks for future growth.
