Kathmandu— Dr. Shiba P. Adhikari, a Nepali-born Materials Scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, has been recognized with the 2026 R&D 100 Award for his research role in developing Electro-Lith—a battery technology designed to streamline manufacturing and enhance efficiency. The award, often called the “Oscars of Innovation,” celebrates the year's most impactful technological advancements globally. Dr. Adhikari’s journey from studying chemistry in Nepal to contributing to cutting-edge energy research at a leading U.S. national laboratory highlights his dedication to solving practical problems in materials science and energy storage.

Early Education and International Career

Dr. Adhikari's interest in science began during his studies in Nepal, prompting him to pursue advanced education abroad. He earned a Master’s degree in Materials Chemistry from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom before completing a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Wake Forest University in the United States. Following postdoctoral research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, he joined Argonne National Laboratory's Applied Materials Division in 2022, where he currently works as a Materials Scientist.

The Promise of Electro-Lith Technology

With global demand for lithium-ion batteries rapidly increasing due to their use in electric vehicles, smartphones, and renewable energy storage, innovations in battery manufacturing are crucial. Electro-Lith addresses this need by focusing on pre-processing battery materials using an electrochemical approach to add lithium and create a protective layer around active particles. This method has the potential to simplify production, reduce processing time and energy consumption, and ultimately lower manufacturing costs.

A Focus on Practical Application

The R&D 100 Award recognizes Dr. Adhikari’s consistent focus on translating scientific research into real-world applications. He prioritizes understanding how advanced materials and chemical processes can be implemented in practical technologies, rather than solely focusing on laboratory demonstrations. This approach is particularly evident in his battery research, where even incremental improvements to manufacturing steps can significantly impact performance and scalability.

Extensive Research Portfolio

Electro-Lith represents just one aspect of Dr. Adhikari’s comprehensive research portfolio, which includes over 40 scientific publications and multiple U.S. patents. His broader interests encompass advanced materials, battery materials, MXenes—a class of two-dimensional materials with promising properties—electrocatalysis, and various energy technologies. He is currently involved in several U.S. Department of Energy-supported projects aimed at advancing future energy storage and electrical infrastructure.

Dr. Adhikari’s work continues to contribute to advancements in battery technology and sustainable energy solutions, with ongoing research exploring the potential of MXenes and other innovative materials.
