Gaza’s Breastfeeding Mothers Face Mounting Challenges Amid War and Displacement

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Amidst the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, breastfeeding mothers are struggling to nourish their infants due to widespread hunger, displacement, stress, and harsh living conditions. Women like Eman Huneidq and Hiba al-Masri are turning to centers such as Hikr al-Jame’ Health Centre in Deir el-Balah for guidance and support, navigating the difficulties of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood while facing limited resources and constant instability.

A Lifeline at the Mother and Child Corner

The Mother and Child Corner at Hikr al-Jame’ Health Centre provides crucial breastfeeding support to approximately 400 to 500 women each month. Nursing manager Sabreen al-Buhaisi explains that displacement, loss, economic hardship, and evolving beliefs about breastfeeding all contribute to the challenges mothers face. The center adopts a holistic approach, involving families in sessions designed to foster supportive environments for breastfeeding mothers.

Navigating Health Concerns and Limited Resources

Eman Huneidq, a 38-year-old mother of three with pre-existing health conditions, faced particular difficulties during her recent pregnancy. Displaced from northern Gaza, she struggled to breastfeed due to painful cracks in her breasts and limited access to necessary medical creams—a consequence of Israeli restrictions on imports. The center helped Eman manage her diabetes while providing guidance on nutrition within the constraints of available food supplies in Gaza, where basic necessities are often unaffordable.

Grief, Crowding, and Persistent Struggles

Hiba al-Masri, a 23-year-old mother who lost her infant daughter earlier in the conflict, is now focused on caring for her three-month-old son, Yusuf. Displaced with her family and living in overcrowded conditions, Hiba faces challenges finding privacy while breastfeeding and managing the demands of motherhood. Despite these hardships, she has observed improvements in Yusuf’s health thanks to the support received at the Mother and Child Corner.

Addressing Misconceptions and Nutritional Deficiencies

Breastfeeding specialist Iman Abu Ouda highlights that many mothers believe their psychological state and poor nutrition are hindering their ability to breastfeed. The center works to reassure them that breastfeeding is still possible even in difficult circumstances, while acknowledging the severe food shortages. When meat, fish, and fruit are unaffordable, they suggest cheaper alternatives like lentils, beans, and chickpeas, supplementing with available nutritional resources. They also collaborate with a mental health team to support mothers grappling with grief and trauma.

Despite the vital support offered by centers like Hikr al-Jame’, mothers in Gaza continue to face immense challenges providing for their children amidst ongoing conflict and displacement, highlighting the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid and improved living conditions.
