Kathmandu— A three-day search for two-and-a-half-year-old Shivan Tamang concluded successfully on August 20th, when the child was found safe in the Shankhadevi Community Forest of Gaindakot Municipality, Nawalpur District, Nepal. Shivan had been missing since August 18th after following his grandmother, Hem Kumari Ale, into the forest as she collected mushrooms; a large search party comprised of police and local residents mobilized to find him, ultimately locating him near Bhagar Khola.

The Disappearance

On the morning of August 18th, Hem Kumari Ale ventured into Shankhadevi Community Forest with a sickle and bag to gather mushrooms, a routine activity for her. Unbeknownst to her, young Shivan quietly followed. A relative spotted Shivan en route and asked where he was going; the child indicated his grandmother was ahead, and continued walking in an attempt to catch up. However, the pair became separated, and upon returning home, Hem Kumari realized Shivan was missing.

Extensive Search Efforts

Neighbors and relatives immediately initiated a search, focusing on paths leading into the forest. When initial efforts proved fruitless, the family alerted the Area Police Office in Gaindakot around 2:00 pm. A large-scale operation quickly formed, involving personnel from multiple police offices – including Gaindakot, Rajahar, and Beldiya – as well as members of the Armed Police Force and approximately 200 local volunteers. The search team spent hours each day combing through the forest, utilizing torchlights on the first night but finding no trace of the child.

Relief After Three Days

The search continued for three days, with hope dwindling amidst growing fear among those involved. On August 20th, at approximately 10:00 am, Shivan was finally located crying in a secluded area near Bhagar Khola within the forest. The discovery brought immense relief to his family, the police force, and the many residents who had participated in the search. He was immediately transported to a government hospital in Bharatpur for a medical evaluation.

Child's Condition

Following a thorough examination, doctors found Shivan to be in good condition, noting only minor blisters on his body. Inspector Laxman Giri, chief of the Area Police Office, Gaindakot, confirmed that there were no serious health concerns after meeting with the rescued child. After receiving necessary medical attention, Shivan was safely reunited with his family.

The ordeal lasting three days will remain a poignant memory for Shivan’s family and the community who rallied together to ensure his safe return.
